Educational objectives: At the conclusion of the postgraduate course, attendees will be able to:
- Summarize the current global prevalence of rheumatic fever/rheumatic heart disease (RF/RHD)
- Characterize best practices in primary and secondary prevention of RHD
- Discuss screening programs and echocardiographic diagnosis
- Understand the potential for and barriers to development of streptococci vaccine
- Identify tools and models for training and awareness-raising of RHD
- Discuss challenges and successes of RHD prevention and control
- Identify ways that surgical services can reinforce and promote RHD prevention and control
- Have a broadened knowledge regarding criteria for surgery that reinforces compliance
- Assess various surgical techniques in treating rheumatic heart valve disease.
